Refrigerated trailer hire vs Freezer trailer hire: a guide

Refrigerated trailer hire vs freezer trailer hire comes down to one thing: a refrigerated trailer keeps food and drink chilled, while a freezer trailer keeps it frozen solid. Choose a fridge trailer for drinks, dairy, salads, fresh meat and prepared food you will use within a few days, and a freezer trailer for ice cream, frozen stock and anything that must stay frozen until it is cooked. We hire both across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and the wider East Anglia region, delivered and collected from our depot at Fundenhall near Norwich.

Key facts: fridge trailer vs freezer trailer

  • Refrigerated (fridge) trailer: holds chilled temperatures for fresh food and drink that will be used within days.
  • Freezer trailer: holds frozen temperatures for stock that must not thaw, such as ice cream, frozen meat and bulk frozen food.
  • Not sure which? Think about what you are storing and how long for. If any of it is frozen when it arrives, you need a freezer trailer for that part.
  • Both are delivered and collected by us, GPS-tracked, and sited where you need them across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and East Anglia.
  • Smaller jobs: we also hire display fridges, bottle coolers and chest freezers that run from a standard 240V socket.

What is the difference between a fridge trailer and a freezer trailer?

The difference is simply the temperature each one is built to hold. A refrigerated trailer runs at chilled temperatures, keeping food safely cold without freezing it. A freezer trailer runs well below freezing so that frozen stock stays hard and does not start to thaw at the edges.

UK food safety rules require chilled food to be kept at 8°C or below, and most caterers work to 5°C or below as good practice. Frozen food is normally stored at around -18°C. Those two targets are a long way apart, which is why you cannot treat the two trailers as interchangeable. Put frozen food in a fridge trailer and it will thaw. Put fresh salad or cans of lager in a freezer trailer and you will have a very different problem.

From the outside they look much the same: a towable trailer with a sealed, insulated body and a refrigeration unit. Both are delivered to your site by us, plugged in, checked and left running, then collected when you are done. Our refrigerated trailer hire and freezer trailer hire pages cover each in more detail.

When a refrigerated trailer is the right choice

A fridge trailer is the right pick for the majority of events and short-term jobs we see across Norfolk and Suffolk. If everything you are storing is fresh rather than frozen, this is the one you want.

  • Weddings and parties: cases of beer, wine and soft drinks, plus dairy, cream, desserts and buffet food prepared the day before.
  • Outside caterers: fresh meat, fish, salads and prepared dishes held safely between kitchen and service.
  • Pubs, bars and festivals: bulk drinks storage when the cellar or bar fridges cannot keep up with a bank holiday crowd.
  • Farm shops and growers: fresh produce, eggs and dairy during a harvest glut or a busy weekend.
  • Breakdown cover: a restaurant or shop whose walk-in chiller has failed and needs stock kept safe while it is repaired.

The honest downside is that a fridge trailer will not hold anything frozen. If you have even a few tubs of ice cream or a chest of frozen burgers on your list, read the next section.

When a freezer trailer is the right choice

A freezer trailer is the right choice when any part of your stock arrives frozen and needs to stay that way. It is also the one to call for if a commercial freezer has packed up and you are watching the thermometer climb.

  • Ice cream and frozen desserts: for fetes, shows and summer events where a domestic freezer will not cope.
  • Butchers and the meat trade: frozen carcasses, joints and sausages held through a busy season or while a freezer room is out of action.
  • Caterers buying in bulk: frozen chips, pastries, chicken and fish bought ahead of a large event.
  • Farms and smallholdings: frozen produce and meat boxes stored between slaughter and sale.
  • Emergency freezer failures: moving stock into a freezer trailer quickly can save thousands of pounds of food that would otherwise be written off.

The trade-off is that a freezer trailer is not the place for fresh food and drinks. If your event needs both chilled and frozen storage, the usual answer is one trailer of each, or a freezer trailer alongside a smaller chilled unit. We are happy to talk that through rather than have you guess.

What about hiring both, or something smaller?

Plenty of our customers need chilled and frozen storage at the same time. A wedding caterer might want a fridge trailer for drinks and buffet food plus a freezer trailer for the ice cream course. A farm shop might want a freezer trailer for meat boxes and a fridge trailer for dairy and veg. Hiring one of each keeps every item at the right temperature, which is what an environmental health officer will want to see.

If your frozen stock is only a few boxes, a trailer may be more than you need. We also hire small and medium chest freezers, glass-fronted display fridges and bottle coolers. These are separate, free-standing units that we deliver alongside a trailer, or on their own, and they run from a normal 240V socket with no installation and no engineer required. You can see the full range on our display fridge and chest freezer hire page.

Refrigerated trailer hire vs freezer trailer hire: a quick decision checklist

  • Is anything frozen when it arrives? Yes means you need a freezer trailer for that stock.
  • Is it mainly drinks, dairy, fresh meat and prepared food? A refrigerated trailer is the right fit.
  • Do you need both? Hire one of each, or pair a trailer with a chest freezer or display fridge for the smaller amount.
  • How long is the hire? Tell us the dates and we will plan delivery and collection around your event or repair.
  • Where will it sit? Both trailers need a level spot and a power supply. We site them for you and check they are running before we leave.

Every hire is quoted individually, so the quickest route to the right answer is a short conversation about what you are storing, how much of it and for how long. We will tell you plainly which trailer, or which combination, suits the job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a freezer trailer as a fridge trailer?

We would not recommend it. A freezer trailer is set up to hold frozen temperatures, and fresh food and drinks stored in it will freeze and spoil. If you need chilled storage, hire a refrigerated trailer, and if you need both, we can supply one of each.

Will a refrigerated trailer keep ice cream frozen?

No. A fridge trailer holds chilled temperatures, so ice cream and other frozen stock will soften and thaw. Frozen goods always need a freezer trailer or a chest freezer.

How do I know the trailer is holding the right temperature?

Our trailers are GPS-tracked and we check each one is running correctly before we leave your site. If you want to know more about how we keep an eye on our trailers, ask us about temperature monitoring when you book.

Do you deliver fridge and freezer trailers outside Norwich?
